Employment
Works Youth Initiative
High
School/High Tech Program
Curriculum
Employment Works has enhanced its existing resources in order to better
promote the potential success of High School/High Tech. Employment Works
has created and initiated an eight (8) week curriculum that entails daily
courses related to employment, leadership, academics and community
engagement. This curriculum engages youth with a variety of learning
opportunities facilitated by local businesses, volunteers and Employment
Works staff. Although the program is set up for eight weeks, it is
flexible to accommodate various schedules with days and times during the
week. This curriculum is as follows:
Employment Course – The
employment topic will present youth with a unique aspect of employment to
help critically think about obtaining and retaining employment.
Co-facilitating each employment topic will be a local business
representative. During the Employment Course, youth are provided with job
seeking skills. Topics include interviewing, job searching, resume
building, application completion and understanding what to expect from
employers during a job search.
Leadership Course – The
leadership component will challenge each youth to develop strategies
regarding their ability to be proactive and communicative for enhanced
self-awareness. The concepts learned in this course will compliment those
of the Employment Course, but are not necessarily considered job seeking
skills. Instead, they relate more to personal skills such as confidence
and being proactive in life.
Work Experience Course–
Every week students will take part in a Work Experience activity. Work
Experience activities will take youth into the community for volunteer
events, business tours, job shadowing, situational assessments.
Independent Study Course –
Each week, each youth will be given an individual task to complete before
the start of the next week.
